What is ISO 45001?

This standard is designed to help organizations improve workplace safety, reduce workplace risks, and create safer and healthier working conditions. ISO 45001 replaces OHSAS 18001 and is globally recognized as a reference for implementing best practices in occupational health and safety.

Why Do We Use It?

1. Improving Occupational Health and Safety

ISO 45001 helps identify and manage risks that can lead to accidents and illnesses in the workplace. By implementing this standard, organizations can create a safer and healthier work environment for all employees.

2. Compliance with Legal Requirements

ISO 45001 ensures that organizations comply with all relevant legal regulations and requirements related to occupational health and safety. Compliance not only avoids legal sanctions but also enhances the company's reputation with stakeholders.

3. Boosting Employee Morale and Productivity

A safe and healthy work environment enhances job satisfaction and employee morale. Employees who feel safe are likely to be more productive and motivated, ultimately improving overall organizational performance.

4. Reducing Costs and Losses

By reducing accidents and health incidents, organizations can lower costs related to insurance, worker compensation, and production losses due to employee absenteeism.

5. Enhancing Reputation and Credibility Org

anizations that implement ISO 45001 demonstrate a strong commitment to occupational health and safety. This enhances reputation and credibility with employees, customers, business partners, and the wider community.

6. Improving Operational Efficiency

ISO 45001 helps in planning and controlling processes necessary to meet health and safety requirements. By reducing risks and improving control, organizations can achieve better operational efficiency.

7. Facilitating Awareness and Employee Education

Implementing ISO 45001 includes training and increasing employee awareness of health and safety issues. Educated employees are better able to identify and report potential hazards, which helps prevent accidents and incidents.

8. Continuous Improvement

ISO 45001 promotes a systematic approach to continuously improve occupational health and safety performance. This includes regular evaluation, data analysis, and continuous improvement actions.

9. Integration with Other Management Systems

ISO 45001 is designed with the same High-Level Structure as other ISO standards (e.g., ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management). This enables easy integration with other management systems, creating a cohesive and efficient approach to organizational management.

10. Reducing Legal Risks

By complying with international standards like ISO 45001, organizations reduce legal risks associated with non-compliance with health and safety regulations. This can also help in litigation cases by demonstrating reasonable steps taken to protect employees.

Origin and Development

  1. ISO
The International Organization for Standardization, established in 1947 in Geneva, Switzerland, develops international standards across various industries.
  2. OHSAS 18001
Before ISO 45001, OHSAS 18001 was widely used as a standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It was first published in 1999 by a consortium of national standard bodies and certification bodies.
  3. Need for International Standards
There was a need for a more integrated and globally recognized occupational health and safety standard, which ISO accommodates.
  4. Development of ISO 45001
The development began in 2013 with the formation of ISO/PC 283 project committee. This process involved drafting, public consultation, and revisions.
  5. Publication of ISO 45001
ISO 45001 was published on March 12, 2018, replacing OHSAS 18001. Organizations were given three years to transition to ISO 45001.
  6. Structure and Objectives
Following the same High-Level Structure as other ISO standards (such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001), it facilitates integration with other management systems and aims to reduce occupational health and safety risks while creating a safer and healthier work environment.
